James VI Stewart King of Scotland was born on 19 June 1566 at Edinburgh Castle. James VI reigned from 1567-1615. As the closest heir to the childless Queen Elizabeth I of England through James IV's marriage to Margaret Tudor, James VI had much to look forward to. He took good care not to offend Elizabeth or her government, making only a token protest when his mother was executed. He was the most successful Stuart king (they had changed their name to the French spelling). He wrote "A Counterblast Against Tobacco" and was instrumental in publishing the "King James" version of the Bible, still in use today. He and his wife, Anne of Denmark, had eight children. In 1603 on the death of Queen Elizabeth he left Scotland (with his golf clubs) to become King of England and Scotland and went back to Scotland only once in the next 22 years. James was keen on the political union of "Great Britain" but Scotland was to remain a separate state for another century. James VI died on 27 March 1625 at age 58 from kidney failure at Theobalds Park in Hertfordshire.
