William Ross Hardie

     William Ross Hardie was born on 6 January 1862 at Edinburgh, Scotland. He was educated at Edinburgh University which he entered at age 14. He graduated with an MA and in 1880 went to Oxford as a student at Balliol. He was the most brilliant undergraduate classicist of his generation and won an unusual number of university distinctions. Elected to a fellowship at Balliol in 1884, he spent a year abroad, mostly in Greece and Italy, and returned to his college as tutor, remaining there until his appointment as professor of Humanities at Edinburgh in 1895. He held the Edinburgh Chair until his death. He died on 3 May 1916 at age 54.

Colin Graham Hardie

     Colin Graham Hardie was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Balliol College, Oxford where (like his brother) he won all the major undergraduate prizes in classics and gained firsts in classical moderations (1926) and literae humaniores (1928). He was born on 16 February 1906 at Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a junior research fellow, then fellow and classical tutor (1930-33) at Balliol, before spending 3 years as director of the British School at Rome. In 1936 he was appointed fellow and tutor in classics at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he remained - except for service in the War Office (1941-3) and the admiralty (1943-5) - until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Inklings, and a friend of C.S. Lewis and J.R. Tolkien. He converted to Roman Catholicism in 1945. His scholarly work was devoted largely to Virgil and Dante, and for the 700th anniversary of Dante's birth he gave the Waynflete lectures on him. He was public orator in Oxford from 1967 to 1973. He died on 17 October 1998 at age 92.

     James Robert Balfour was born on 20 April 1842 at Leven, Fife, Scotland. He was a mechanical and railway engineer at Valparaiso, Chile. He married Rachel Ogilvie, daughter of John Ogilvie and Annie (Anne) Maxwell, on 20 September 1871 at 4 Park Place, Dundee, in the Parish of St. Peter. After Rachel died, he returned to London and lived in a flat at Queen Anne's Mansions in Westminster. James visited his sons at Minnie Ogilvie's in Clifton on weekends. He died on 13th November, 1884 at Guy's Hospital from "nephritis, enlarged and dilated heart". He is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery London W10 4RA.

     Maxwell (Max) Balfour was born in 1875 at Valparaiso, Chile, South America. Hewas living at the home of Annie Ogilvie according to the 1881 census.(For details, see profile for Annie (Maxwell) Ogilvie. He was educated at Clifton College in Clifton, near Bristol, and at New College, Oxford. Afterwards, he studied at the Slade School and there made friends with Augustus John, who said that had Max lived he would have been in the front rank of modern artists. He began military service in 1899 in the Boer War serving in the C.I.V. (City Imperial Volunteers) company of "Captain Hole's Cyclist Section of the Inns of Court Volunteeers" with New College friends Lionel Hichens and Lionel Curtis, or, as they called themselves, "The Three Musketeers". They served as despatch riders under Col. Sam Hughes, Intelligence Officer to General Settle (afterwards Canadian Minister of War in 1914). Max Balfour was an artist living at 118 Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, London next door to Turner's studio. His paintings were both topographical and military. He provided illustrations for the first volume of The Survey of London on Trinity Hospital, Mile End Road (1896 - the originals are in the British Museum) written by Arts and Crafts architect C.R. Ashbee. In 1902 Max designed a stained-glass window for St. Andrew's Church, Alfriston, East Sussex. The window, depicting St. Christopher, is located in the chancel. He married Nina Joachim circa 1905. Maxwell (Max) Balfour died in 1914 at London from tuberculosis.

     Percy Balfour was born in 1876 at Valparaiso, Chile, South America. Percy and his brothers, Charles and Max came back to England after their mother died to live with Annie Ogilvie and her family in Bristol. He was educated at Clifton College in Clifton, Bristol and afterward, at Sandhurst. He married Maude Brown in 1907. Percy was killed in action in France during World War I. He died on 12 December, 1917 and is buried at the Sorel Cemetery in France.
