     Col. James Maxwell was born in 1824. He was with the 34th Regiment in 1841, was posted to West Indies in 1851 after a brief period in Ireland. In 1856 he fought and was wounded in the Crimean War. After the war, he retired and lived in Edinburgh. He married Margaret Gilmour circa 1854 at Ireland. According to the 1871 Census, James, a widower, was living at 12 Chester Street,Edinburgh with his mother, Elizabeth, age 82, and 3 children. His daughter, Ena, mentally disabled, lived with the Gilmour (his wife, Margaret's) family. Col. James Maxwell died after 1871.

Charles Ferguson

     Charles Ferguson was born in 1767 at Blairgowrie, Fife, Scotland. He married Helen Fleming circa 1787. Charles Ferguson inherited the 500-acre Easter Dalnabreck farm where he grew potatoes, turnips, oats, flax and grass seed. He also had a few thousand black Highland cattle. Easter Dalnabreck is situated in the parish of Kirkmichael on the SW bank of the River Ardle 3 miles SSW of Kirkmichael [map reference NO 094552] west of the township of Ballintuim which is on the east bank of the river. He died on 22 April 1844 and, with his wife Helen Fleming, is buried next to the south wall of the church in the parish churchyard at Kirkmichael in Strathardle, Pershire, Scotland. The inscription on the gravestone reads: "Erected by the Rev. James Ferguson in memory of his father Charles Ferguson of Easter Dalnabreck who died 22nd April 1844 aged 77 years and of his mother Helen Fleming who died 19th February 1848 aged 84 years".

     Rev. James Ferguson was born in 1803. He was minister of John Knox Church, London. He inherited the farm from his father. James left Dalnabreck to his nephew, Johnnie, and to Johnnie's father for his lifetime, which caused a good deal of family distress. He died on 24 August 1855 and is buried beside his parents Charles and Helen Ferguson in the parish churchyard at Kirkmichael, in Strathardle, Perthshire, Scotland. The inscription on his gravestone reads: "Here also lie the mortal remains of the said Rev. James Ferguson late minister of John Knox Church, London who died 24th August 1855 aged 52 years" (See note for Charles Ferguson.)
