Scarlett was born on 30 July 1777 at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England, and was christened at St. Giles Church. He was an applicant for apprenticeship as mercer, draper and upholster - to his father 'Samuel Scarlett of this Borough' - an apprenticeship of 7 years (witnesses: James Ball and Robert Smith), according to the Burgess Records on 5 October 1792 at Newcastle-under-Lyme. He paid £144 in 1809 to Lewis Buttler of Antigua for a male slave (a copy of the signed receipt being in Mary-Louise Ryan's possession). John Scarlett arrived that same year in York (now Toronto) and started work as chief clerk in the inspector general's office. He started acquiring property along the Humber River and eventually owned 1000 acres. He made a significant contribution to the early economy of Toronto with the establishment of lumber, grist and saw mill complexes that included a general store, commercial hub and grain exchange. John Scarlett was one of the incorporators of the Bank of Upper Canada. In 1846 he sold his mills to William Pearce Howland - (see John Scarlett in Wikipedia for further details.) He married
